I have several bird feeders attached to trees in my yard & they seem to be okay. You could just put a stake in the ground by the tree maybe?

I use nails to put christmas lights on my trees, and they seem to be okay.

or you could go the cheapskate route and use a piece of cardboard, a marker and some tape. Hillbilly style.
