It's a StarChoice which is now owned by Shaw i think. Our receiver was programmed at a friends house then brought over to our house to use. We used to split the bill till she moved away. If I were to buy a DVR, I'd have to drive all the way out to Dryden to get it programmed... or I can actually pay for it.

you should be able to attach an external hard drive to it.
