I would pick General George Washington, because I did a book report on him in high school.

My problem with Giap is that he militarily lost almost every single battle with the notable exception of Dien Bien Phu against the French in 1953. What he did do was totally understand the political ramifications of warfare and he exploited those to maximum effectiveness. Of course the hundreds of thousands of soldiers he willingly sacrificed to achieve those goals probably didn't think all that highly of it.
William T. Sherman deserves some consideration here too.
