I once drove from New Castle to NJ to NY (Brooklyn specifically). The drive wasn't bad, but the people that broke into my car on the street were. I will never drive there again, but that's personal preference. I'm not sure what parking would cost in the city...probably upwards of $25 a day if not more. Unless you have someone to stay with you're going to need lodging anyway, so my suggestion is to fly and take the subway to get around.
My normal plan for going to NYC is to fly (normally I can get a flight for between $120 and $160 depending on any special fares the airlines run) and then stay with a friend who lives in Brooklyn. If some dudebros would provide lodging to others that'd be cool, but you'd have to talk that over. Hotels outside Manhattan (depending how good they are) are probably around $70-$100 a night if you're lucky. The price doubles the closer you get to Manhattan, so if you want a nice place use Priceline to get a deal.
