Jersey is just dirty. AC is not that bad though, but if you leave the casinos, it sucks ass. The beaches are decent for a day or two stay, but I would not plan a week there.

If your south of AC you should be good. You just don't want to be on the strip unless you are at a casino hotel. Your beach should be fine.

Outside of the casinos you're likely to get robbed or assaulted by homeless people. When I would go to the beach in Jersey I would go to Ocean City. It's a dry town, but has a decent atmosphere.

Wildwood is good if you like the boardwalk, amusements and teenagers.
Ocean City is where you'd take the family.
Atlantic City is where you go to gamble and any other sin you can think of.
Seaside Heights is where you go to hang out with the guidos. I used to go there quite a bit and never noticed it was a juicehead beach.
Cape May is pretty boring, but if you're going with a girl take her to the beach for the sunset. (Sunset Beach)
