CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Cannons boomed around Charleston Harbor this morning, The Associated Press Reported, re-creating the bombardment of Fort Sumter that plunged the nation into the Civil War on April 12, 1861, 150 years ago today.

The nation's bloodiest war resulted in more than 600,000 deaths. A look at many of the battles that followed those first shots, which led to Union troops surrendering after absorbing 36 hours of Confederate shells...
