Switching to Android
#1
I've had nothing more than a Blackberry device since around 2000 or 2001. This was long before their devices even offered phone capability. Being in the tech industry I've had a chance to demo, own and setup just about every other device on the market. For years there was no comparison to the way Blackberry organized data and handled email. This is still something in my opinion they do better than any other technology on the market. With that said, they are falling way behind on the rest of what the smart phone world has to offer.

Even with the Verizon 4G phones around the corner I decided to pick up the new Droid 2 Global over the weekend. It was a birthday gift so waiting for the next great thing wasn't really something I wanted to wait on. They were running a buy one get one deal so I talked the guy into giving the free phone to Kristen even though she wasn’t on my account.

My first thought of the phone was that it was kind of heavy, but that seems to only be the case with the Droid 2 because of the pull out keyboard. I thought I'd need a physical keyboard because my experience with the Blackberry Storm made me swear off touch screen phones. To my surprise the on screen keyboard is very easy to use and pretty much works just as well as the iPhone keyboard. Honestly I've been using the voice to text function more than I have been typing.

The 1.2 Ghz processor almost makes you wait for nothing on this phone. You can fly through menus without delay. Going from Blackberry to this phone will have you searching for a lot ways to do things like you used to, but you eventually find that there are ways to accomplish what you want. In Some cases if the phone doesn't offer something there's almost certainly an app that will do it for you.

That brings me on to the Android Market. The Verizon store rep told me there were roughly 90,000 apps available, but a quick Google search had it at 100,000 back in October. While I saw apps priced from $0.99 to $149.00 I came across what seemed to be like a free alternative to most of what I searched for.

It wasn't very long before I left the Android market to see if apps were available on "other sites." Within an hour of searching I had 60 apps downloaded on the computer and about 15 mins after that I had them transferred to the Droid and running for free. (I deleted them right after because pirating is bad.)
In conclusion it was a great choice to dump the berry and go with the Droid. It still feels foreign in my hands, but the things it can do have me amazed enough that I’ll get used to it pretty fast. I’ll always respect Blackberry for what they created and what they still offer and hope they don’t wind up like other companies that have gone away.

I would like to buy a Droid X so I can get off of Sprint and onto Verizon which has a much better network and signal where I work. Also getting a company discount would be nice. I'm just too cheap to spend $200 on it, haha. I'll buy it eventually...I just like to procrastinate.

I moved from NJ to PA with AT&T and switched to Nextel\Sprint for work. The coverage with Sprint\Nextel was killing the field workers in Maryland so I switched them to AT&T. AT&T's coverage was better in Maryland, but I dropped calls like crazy at home in PA. When I left that job and lost the company phone I went to Verizon and there are no more dropped calls.

The Sprint HTC Evo seems to be a pretty bad ass phone and it's 4G so even if you stay on Sprint you have a good phone there.

The only thing that kept me away from the Droid X was the difference in the Exchange email integration that the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro offered.

I have heard good things about it...but, it'd still be on Sprint. I have no problems with coverage when I'm at home. My biggest concern is being able to use the phone at work. I can barely use my phone there right now because Sprint's signal is too poor. The lab I work in is a concrete building inside of a giant concrete warehouse. I have to point the phone a certain way to not drop calls or send texts, and it still does it sometimes. Everyone in the lab has used all of the major cell providers at one time or another, and the only provider that gets good coverage in there is Verizon.

Should have waited until February, Verizon's 4G phone roll out then. No matter if it's a droid, blackberry or LG, it's gonna be a better phone come Feb and current phones will not be forward compatible.

just because they are going to show off a few new 4G phones at CES in Jan doesn't mean they will be ready in february.

Plus having all if the features now is worth it.

In March I'll be 1 year into my 2 year deal, and as long as I go through a Verizon store, I can upgrade at their discounted price.
And by then I think they'll have those dual core phones out.
So until then, I'm stuck with my Droid. And I'm planning on putting it on ebay when I'm done with it. Maybe it'll even pay for my new phone.
