I've been working in the structural/automotive conveyor business for 15 years now.
To switch to another software, I'd have to go more mechanical. And that would be like starting all over.
So, I would have to learn the software and get a mechanical engineering degree to get anywhere.

What does one do on a daily basis in this type of business?

I've been wanting to take time to learn those and SQL. I can't believe all the money I paid out for college to only be able to learn C++, FORTRAN, Pascal and VB. What a waste of my life.

In grade 11 I took a computer course to fill up my schedule. We blew threw everything the teacher was supposed to teach us so he started teaching us C++. The teacher told me I should take his grade 12 programming course but I didn't want to.

You silly kids... We barely had computers in my day.

I'm friends with that teacher still. He constantly goes to classes upgrade his training. If I really wanted to learn it now he would teach me.

Right now, I'm working on a couple of "bridges" for the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant.
They build Cadillacs there now, but are adding the Camaro. The Camaro is going to be smaller than the current one, and I think it'll be on the same platform as the ATS.
But anyway, the bridges are just rails that support equipment used to install something on a car. I don't even know what they're doing at this station.

But they say where they need the bridge, and we have to figure out how to hang it. If it's from building steel, or other steel that's already there.
And we have to draw up all the beams and hangers. How long, where all the holes need to be punched, everything. Down to a 1/16 of an inch.
I'm drawing it all up in a 3D model right now. Thursday we're going out into the plant to measure and check existing conditions.

That sounds pretty cool actually. 3D modelling software has always been interesting to me, but it's one of those things I'd like to learn but will never actually use.

I think next week I'm going back down to Nashville.
It's pretty good.
The structural side is a little more boring. Just drawing up steel framing for buildings. What size everything is and how it connects together.

I have an old friend who is in IT, and he's at a job where's he's some kind of tech support for a CAD software company but he doesn't know much about the actual program. I think he still works there, I haven't talked to him in a long time.

Jim will be 45, I will be 42 when our daughter turns 18. That winter we will be down south from October to April. We've discussed thoroughly.

You should really come up and visit though. We own 160 acres,we have a beach, a lake, a dirt track, an airsoft field. I can take you to fake football and get you hammered on very expensive Canadian beer. By that time the Tim Hortons in town should be up and running... I'll get you coffee for your hangover.

We would go southwest.... Arizona most likely. A few of our friends have condos in Phoenix already.

Shit if I had any of that training I'd be so much better off. I had 0 programming classes and that's why it's so hard for me to start learning on my own. Did you just not like doing C++ and VB?

I had to learn C++ on UNIX, with no option of learning Visual C++. It felt so damn out-dated at the time. It didn't help that one professor barely spoke English and the other was too busy bitching about his job. I have 2 versions of the book: C++ in Plain English, which is where I learned a lot about it. I enjoyed learning VB, but they only offered one semester of it and that only covered the basics. I wanted to learn more, but that wasn't an option at the 2 colleges I was bouncing between. I also learned HTML and absolutely loved that one. In fact, I took it again when I left my first college since the credit wouldn't transfer. I literally taught that class, because the nimrod professor kept showing everyone the wrong codes and was clueless why her images never worked :roll: . The problem with that at the time was that HTML was on it's way out and JAVA & DHTML were coming in and there were no classes offered. I also got screwed out of getting a college certification for it. Then it it just came to that I needed to get a better job and my grandma became ill, so priorities got in the way of more schooling.
