Cross Canadian Ragweed - Boys from Oklahoma

Many of you know that I talk about how much I enjoy Red Dirt music. Most people call it Red Dirt Country, but that is a misnomer. It is really a fusion of many kinds of music. Most of the great old school Southern Rock (like Lynard Skynard) would be considered Red Dirt by today's standards.

Stillwater, Oklahoma is considered the home of Red Dirt music and Cross Canadian Ragweed (CCR but not to be confused with Credence Clearwater Revival) is perhaps the best known of them all.

This is likely their best known song: The Boys from Oklahoma. The video isn't great so I would suggest that you use it to see the pics and hear the song. Then click on one of the live versions and see just how much the crowd gets into it.

Musically it is good, not great but you get a feel for what they can do.

What I love about CCR and this music in particular is that it tells a story without being overly political. They are just good old boys from Oklahoma that went to OSU and they have too many influences to be just country. They tell the story they want to tell in a way that touches folks. You can dance to it, sing along. It isn't about mama, trains, getting drunk (though they do like their weed), etc. It is just real world stuff.

They sell out everywhere they play and they just love playing. They have yet to make a shitty album.

I read CCR and automatically thought of Credence Clearwater Revival. Not feeling this group, I gave it a shot, but it's too folksy/country for me.

That's cool. Folk is definitely a Red Dirt influence. Not so much musically as much as it is about story telling.

I'm glad you gave it a shot. We play a lot of Red Dirt at our tailgate parties and such. It is perfect for that. Also we are getting more and more Red Dirt oriented bands around the area.

The best part of it for me are that they are really good musicians. I know I didn't put songs that show that off as much as I wanted to put one that had some good catches and stuff on it.
