Since I saw this thread I check Micro center often, because there is a store a few miles from me.

Is there a catch with this place? My Dell from 2006 is just too slow & I am sick of updating & reformatting

Would a computer like this be any good from microcenter? My local pick-up site is Yonkers NY

It seems like a pretty decent, basic computer.

I've bought a ton of stuff from Microcenter over the years, there is one a few miles from where I work. It can get pretty un-organized looking in the store. But it's a good, legit store.
It seems like some of the people working there are big computer nerds and know their stuff, and the rest are people who just wanted a job.

That's about what I am looking for to replace Jim's dinosaur.
Just because someone can call me Mom now doesn't mean I am gonna be Betty Freakin Cocker and bake any pies.

Not bad...but if you shop a bit you'll be able to do a lot better. I bought a Dell i620 desktop in January for $287 from Best Buy...i3 processor, 4GB RAM and a 1.5 TB hard drive with built in b/g/n wi-fi.

Staples had one very similar to that build on sale last week for $199.

Or...you could build your own for even less.

Right now I have 2 GB's of RAM, in 4 slots

Can you just transfer RAM from one system to another? what are the rules? do they have to be equal speeds?

Depends on the motherboard. A lot of the newer systems are just giving two slots...but RAM is cheap. For a new system with 4GB of Ram all you'd need is a single 4GB stick (assuming they didn't put 2 2GB sticks in it). for 97% of the people out there 4GB of RAM is plenty.

There is a dude at work that was bragging about upgrading to 16gb RAM. I asked if he was doing a lot of photoshop, video editing, CAD work, gaming.. he said no to all of them, uses it for porn and facebook. I told him he was an idiot for wasting money

I run AutoCad 2011 and Adobe CS3 on my i3 with 4GB of RAM and it's fine. If I find a deal to upgrade it to 8GB I will...but even those programs do fairly well for what I need with just 4GB.

At work I have AutoCAD 2010 with 4GB of DDR ram, and a single core 3Ghz chip ( :? ) and a GT220 video card with a gig of DDR2 ram.
And at home I have AutoCAD 2012 (free bootleg  )with 4GB of DDR2 ram, a Q6600 (1.9GHz I think) quad core and an 8800GTS.
My computer at home is a whole lot faster then my computer at work.

We've looked at upgrading computers at work and they've told us that once you get up to that much ram, the processor will be the limiting factor.

But yes, as long as you're doing 'normal person' computing, and not doing 3D modeling or video editing 4GB of ram is plenty.
Even with the lower end processors that are out now.

For normal use anything made after 2005 with at least 2GB of RAM, a clean registry and good spyware/anti-virus ought to be fine. Facebook, email and web-browsing are pretty non-intensive. If you can load Windows 7 on it....you should be good to go.

Mine is a Dell Dimension 2006, Windows XP with 2GB of RAM
Lately its freezing a lot, videos stutter, I try to play flash games & the computer freezes
When on a website like facebook, I get a message from google chrome that I am using too much memory.

At work we have windows 7, 2GB RAM, but it runs so smooth, plus I have a widescreen monitor at work but not at home

Looking for better options for home, Upgrade RAM, Windows, & Monitor, but the cost of all of those is the cost of a new computer from microcenter

A fresh install of either XP or W7 would cure all of those issues. If a 2006 computer has never been formatted and redone...that's what you can expect to get.

He did say he's sick of reformating it.
Maybe some of the hardware is starting to go bad.

If it took 1 hour to reformat instead of 3-4 hours to re-install everything then I would not mind

I reformat like twice a year. You'd be surprised what shit you don't wind up missing when you don't reinstall it.

Hondo is correct. Unless you bought a shitty Celeron machine, if its from 2006 it should rum fine with XP or 7 with at least 2GB of RAM.

I agree, but its all the window xp updates that take 2-3 hours to update.

For Windows 7, I think you need a widescreen monitor? Can anyone confirm?

I have a Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)

so I found my e-mail from 2006, I may have to just upgrade my RAM then
