Laptop/Tablet Help
#1
Ok, I know I've been saying I"m going to get a new one for a long time now but every time I go to look at them I get flustered and then the salesperson just tries to sell me on the most expensive thing they've got. I know absolutely nothing about computers.
I am just using the thing for business paperwork while I am not home and going on the internet while I am bored sitting in a truck.
This is the one I was looking at in the store:

Help!!!

What's wrong with your old laptop? From what you're saying you use one for anything made after 2006 should be perfect. Your old one probably needs nothing more than a memory upgrade and a fresh install of Windows 7. What do you have and what are the specs? I'd be happy to rebuild it for you for the cost of the RAM and shipping.

I got an old beast of a laptop, its about the size of a college textbook, it has windows 97 on it and the battery is pooched, you have to leave it plugged in or it'll die. I got it as a hand me down college user thing from my inlaws. It now sits in my basement, in it's suitcase of a bag and collects dust. It still has a floppy disk drive.
The laptop I used around my house the last year was my work laptop but since my term contract was up at the end of January I had to return it.

Ok..if it has Windows 98 on it...time for a new laptop. Some really decent machines can be had for around $300. My suggestion is to start watching http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9 and watch for laptop deals. Not sure how shipping to Canada might affect your ability to get in some of those prices.

Something like this would do you just fine:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0382600

$249 USD ...but it's local pickup only. Any of us could grab it for you but shipping adds another $50.

I have a bunch of shopping to do at the microcenter this weekend. Do I need to pick this up for you? Shipping is relativly cheap for me. Not sure about canada, but I'm guess a lot less that 50

Shipping to Canada is tricky.
I think it either will take for ever, or cost a lot if you want it quick.
It might be easier for me to take it into Canada, then mail it.

That's a much better plan. Let Chip get one for you at the Detroit MC and then cross over to Windsor and mail it. No customs.....no hassles and cheaper.

Can't make that 4 hr trip this weekend, but thanks for the offer I appreciate it man.
I got an email form a DJ buddy telling me about a site with discount DJ lighting & stuff. When I clicked on it, my laptop went crazy. He's a legit dude & has no idea about the email or how I got it. "I believe him Yo"
Anyway a virus scan popped up & started running(which was bogus of course) & wiped everything out. I rarely open stuff that I am not sure what & who, but I got blind-sided with this one...swoot!!!

Chances are your data is ok....you've just been hijacked by malware. Whatever you do DON'T go buy a new computer over it. In an absolute worst-case scenario your existing computer can be re-done. Check your PM

Bump

Since I saw this thread I check Micro center often, because there is a store a few miles from me.

Is there a catch with this place? My Dell from 2006 is just too slow & I am sick of updating & reformatting

Would a computer like this be any good from microcenter? My local pick-up site is Yonkers NY

It seems like a pretty decent, basic computer.

I've bought a ton of stuff from Microcenter over the years, there is one a few miles from where I work. It can get pretty un-organized looking in the store. But it's a good, legit store.
It seems like some of the people working there are big computer nerds and know their stuff, and the rest are people who just wanted a job.
