They always say that modern sports pads are more like armor.

Exactly! Think about it. You don't need any kind of heavy armour, just something to protect against bites and scratchies...zombie scratchies. ZACK DON'T SHOOT! You could make armour out of wood, plastic, whatever. Modified hockey equipment would work mighty fine. It's the crazy humans that want to shoot you you'll have to watch out for.
