My '95 Corolla has started making a warbling noise when I'm going down the road maintaining a lower speed and it is worse when I just let off the gas completely and let it naturally slow down. Hit the gas or the brakes and the noise pretty much stops. I can't really tell where the noise is coming from while I'm driving.
This car needs to last me another 2 years so I can get my house paid off before getting something new. It has 180,000 miles on it and I'm about to take it in to have the universal belt and water pump changed as a preventive measure.

I don't know toyotas at all. It kind of sounds like a transaxle issue. I haven't had to mess with very many though. A rear differential will make a noise similar at coast. Hit the gas or brakes, it takes the load off the gears, and the noise goes away.
Noise problems are almost impossible to diagnose, without having the car, and listening in person. It being a Toyota, I really have no idea. I have never worked on one. I'm good enough with the Ford line up now, that I can usually help, just from a description.
That's about all I have. I wish I could help more.

I tried research on the web, and the only thing I found that makes the "warbling" noise, is the tensioner for the timing belt. I guess a carolla has a timing belt. You might want to get that changed as a preventitive measure too. I change the timing belt, and tensioner every 50,000 miles. Ford recomends every 70,000 I think. I have been left stranded a couple times in the last 15. That is why I change the belt earlier.

I'd also check for torn CV joint boots that might indicate a bad CV joint/axle. And also check for uneven tire wear. Badly cupped tires can do that too.

My Accord makes a noise sometimes and seems to be related to the tires or suspension parts. I'm thinking tie rod or something like that, uneven tire wear is just starting too. I have nothing to do at work today, I might go out and rotate my tires.

Took the car in late last week for an oil change and general Winter inspection. I had them try to find the source of the noise. They came back with two things. They say that the front driver's side wheel bearing needs replaced. OK, that doesn't sound like it is a big deal. The second thing is they said that the right transmission arm has a coupling (not the word he used but I can't remember the exact word) and it looks like it is "throwing grease." He said he didn't know if it could be replaced or if the entire transmission arm would have to be replaced.
The thing is that I'm not certain if either of these things can cause that kind of noise. I think the bearing could under the right circumstances.

So what am I looking at price wise to have it done?

I had to change a wheel bearing on my truck. Took me forever to figure out what it was. It would only make noise at certain speeds. Once you got going like 60 it would stop squeaking.
The bearing was pretty cheap.
Just did the front axles on my brother's elantra a few months ago. I think he paid about $200 for both. they just slide in.
I'd say if your're doing it, do one side at a time so you can reference the other side to see how it goes together. If you have a hard time getting your rotors off spray some pb blaster in the little threaded holes in it and screw some bolts in those holes and it should pop off.

PB Blaster is just friggin' awesome. I love that stuff. WD-40 and Liquid Wrench ain't got shit on PB Blaster.

I doubt it is the wheel bearing. When a wheel bearing goes bad, it usually makes a humming noise, not after it goes away. It sounds like a CV or universal joint, but it could be just about anything. But I would get a second mechanic to check it out.
