i understand not being able to install random programs, but for fuck sake, let us update the stuff that is already "approved" and installed. Adobe releases updates like every 4 days, is it that hard to let us update flash and reader on our own

Windows updates should be pushed from a management server and done automatically. Adobe and Java really suck because they update to frequently because they can't ever get it right. I usually policy it so that Adobe and Java doesn't prompt users for updates. If the organization is big enough they should have a system that pushes Adobe and Java updates.
