What makes you like a song? A good beat or riff, or lyrics you can relate to?

I used to pay no attention to the words. Now the lyrics are usually what makes me like a song.
Mostly for me, it's the riffs/guitar solos.

For me it's always been the lyrics and vocals.I just recently started recently paying more attention to the lyrics. For example my favorite 'Appetite' song has always been Paradise City, but I didn't realize how epic Sweet Child o' Mine is until I listened to the instruments. I just wish I was able to pick out n differentiate all the instruments. I basically discovered Rush twice.First because of Geddy Lee and then Alex Lifeson.
I think I tend to lean towards the music part... Like Staind's Mudshovel.. The heavy bass made me fall in love with that song. Even Metallica's stuff... it's the music.

But there are songs that the lyrics will catch me first.. Staind's King Nothing and Megadeth's Sweating Bullets.

I hate how the newer bands are very bland with their instruments.. No real guitar solos or drum solos... That sucks
most of the time I could just remove the lyrics.....I like the music or even how its arranged.....especially if they implement more than guitars and drums.....however electronic crap usually bothers me
Definitely the music...I am huge into metal right now, and obviously I only pick up about 5% of the words. But, the guitar and drums are so friggin' awesome that I don't care what the words are!

Although...the songs that I listen to enough to figure out the words for can end up being a top favorite if the lyrics hit home somehow.
The lyrics don't make a song great for me, but they sure as hell can kill it.
And example would be Lonely Train by Black Stone Cherry. It sounds cool, the guys got a good voice. But holy shit, those lyrics are retarded.

But sometimes the lyrics are everything. Why do think Bob Dylan is popular.

Sometimes, I guess. But even Dylan, his songs I like, I don't like for the lyrics, Hurricane is my favorite Dylan song.
The music is the initial hook. If I like the sound than I will start concentrating on the lyrics. It is the music first.
How bout Joe Satriani. Most of his stuff has no vocals.
Or if you're into Rammstein, most of their lyrics are in German.
